Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
